Al Futtaim Motors, exclusive distributor of Toyota in the UAE, is starting a ‘special service campaign’ for certain models that it retails due to faulty airbag inflators.

“Following communication with Toyota Motor Corporation, we have started a special service campaign on 25,825 Toyota Yaris sedan, Yaris hatchback and Corolla manufactured year 2003 to 2007 in the UAE,” Al Futtaim Motors said in a statement sent out to Emirates 24|7.

The involved vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers. These propellant wafers could cause the inflators to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of an accident.

“In the interests of delivering the highest standards of Toyota product quality and customer care, Al Futtaim Motors will begin contacting customers with affected models as soon as the parts to be replaced are available,” said the statement.

The company advises customers to contact the Al Futtaim Motors customer care centre on 800Toyota (800-869 682) from 8am – 7pm, Saturday to Thursday for further clarification.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank our customers for their patience and understanding,” said a company spokesperson.

Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it would recall just under 5 million Corolla, Vitz and other models worldwide to replace potentially faulty airbag inflators made by Takata Corp.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, a Toyota spokeswoman said, adding that the recall was for investigative purposes.

Nissan Middle too has said it will recall Sentra, Sunny, Pathfinder, X-Trail and popular Patrol for models between 2003 and 2007 without giving further details.

“Subject to the recall are cars across many models built between March 2003 and November 2007, including 1.36 million in Japan. Nissan Motor Co Ltd said it was recalling about 1.56 million cars globally over the same issue, adding that no accidents or injuries had been reported,” reported Reuters.
