A three-member Indian family, including a six-month old baby girl, died on the spot in a major road accident on the Dhaid-Fujairah highway.

The car in which the family was travelling crashed into another vehicle on Friday night, killing the three and seriously injuring the driver and an Arab who were travelling with the family.

Suresh Narayanan, 30, an aluminium fabricator in Ras Al Khaimah, his wife Dilna Suresh and the six-month old daughter, Thinmaya, died in the accident. The baby and mother had arrived in the UAE only two months ago.

The family was on its way to Fujairah when their car hit a truck and was totally damaged. The deceased hailed from Kannur District of Kerala, India. Other details of the accident are awaited.

The bodies have been kept in a hospital morgue in Ras Al Khaimah.

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of road accidents in Ras Al Khaimah. More than 800 major accidents were recorded in the past five months up to May 2010, resulting in 29 deaths, of which 16 were UAE nationals.

The Ras Al Khaimah police have been conducting a number of awareness campaigns to improve road safety.

There have also been a large number of accidents on the Dibba-Masafi road with the Digdaga traffic branch, which serves the southern part of Ras Al Khaimah, reporting 764 traffic accidents and eight deaths during the past five months, Colonel Nasser Salem Al Muraddad, Chief of the Traffic and Licensing Department in Ras Al Khaimah, said recently.

The snaking, single-carriage lane runs through the Fujairah mountains to the town of Masafi in Ras Al Khaimah.
