A Blood Moon will be visible over the next 24 hours across parts of Asia and Americas, but residents of the UAE will have to wait another six months to catch this phenomenon that will emerge with the onset of the total lunar eclipse.

The Middle East, Europe and Africa will miss out on this rare phenomenon, however those in parts of the Americas, Australia and East Asia will be able to have a full or partial view of the lunar eclipse, weather permitting.

The eclipse starts at noon UAE time, reaching its peak just before sunrise at 2.25pm.

Residents of the UAE who want to view the total eclipse from the comfort of their couches or computer tables can catch the event 'live' online via webcasts from NASA and the Slooh Community Observatory.

The NASA webcast will also feature a chat with the space agency’s moon experts at 11am

There are several legends that surround this phenomenon, but the name itself describes the orange, reddish hue that is cast over the Moon when sunlight scatters over Earth’s atmosphere.

This phenomenon can occur during a total lunar eclipse when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra or shadow; this occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned.

This is the second total eclipse to occur this year, with the first taking place on April 15.

UAE skywatchers need not fret about missing the celestial phenomenon as two other lunar eclipses are expected next year, the first on April 4, 2015.
