Toyota recalls Avalon, Land Cruiser in UAE

Toyota has announced its decision to recall select models of Toyota Avalon and Land Cruiser 70 pick-up vehicles over manufacturing faults.

These models will be put through a special service campaign.

An official statement from Al Futtaim Motors stated that 372 Avalons, from the 2003-2004 models, have been listed for recall.

“Following communication with Toyota Motor Corporation, we have started a special service campaign on 372 Toyota Avalon 2003- 2004 models in the UAE,” said Jon Williams, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Motors.

“The airbag control module for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) in these vehicles could have been manufactured with application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). When exposed to high inductive electrical noise from various vehicle electrical components, these ASICs could experience an internal short that creates abnormal current flow and increased heat. 

“If this occurs, there is a possibility that the ASIC could become damaged. In some instances, the front airbag(s) and/or seat belt pretensions could inadvertently deploy. To fix this, a sub-wire harness (filter) will be installed to minimise electrical noise from the other electrical components”.

In addition, 418 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 pick-up, 2012 to 2014 models, are also on the list of recall.

“For vehicles equipped with diesel engines and ABS systems, there is a possibility that the brake hose bracket located on the front axle may break if the vehicle is operated under harsh condition such as driving on corrugated road for extended periods,” the statement read.  “If the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the brake tube clamped with the brake hose bracket might get damaged and there is a possibility that the brake fluid could leak out.”
