Traffic fatalities decline in Sharjah

Traffic-related deaths have significantly reduced in Sharjah, according to a top police official.

Mubarak Al Dukhan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, said the number of fatal accidents has declined during the last nine months of this year compared to the same period of 2012 by 10 per cent.

Effective awareness campaigns in the emirate have contributed to the decline in numbers.

The number of the fatalities and accidents that cause serious injuries is 471 compared to 524 incidents in 2012.

This includes 245 collisions due to over speeding in 2012 and 289 collisions last year – a dip of 15.2 per cent.

Run-over mishaps numbered 164 this year, down from 171 last year – a 5.6 per cent decline.

While, 45 accidents occurred due to speeding this year, 53 cases were reported last year which caused death and injury to many people.

The total number of the serious injuries this year hit 626 down from 663 cases in 2012.

About 79 people died this year in other traffic-related accidents, while there were 84 similar deaths recorded last year – a decline of 9.5 per cent.

Brig. Al Dukhan stressed that the public is a strategic partners in implementing safety and security plans. The success of any plan would not happen without the interaction and cooperation of the public because “Safety is a collective responsibility”.

He urged all departments of Sharjah Police to earnestly follow up on the strategic plans to reduce traffic accidents.
