An Arab man swindled several drivers in Abu Dhabi by paying their traffic fines online through stolen credit cards before he was nabbed by the police.

The information technology and telecommunications at the Ministry of Interior discovered that many traffic fines had been paid online by stolen credit cards through the website of the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

When contacted by the police, the drivers admitted their fines had been paid by an Arab man who offered them discount of up to 50 per cent on the penalties. But they denied knowing the payments were made through stolen credit cards.

Police investigators later managed to locate the man and arrest him. He confessed to such acts with the help of friend residing abroad.

According to the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej, the man’s friend had managed to obtain data from several credit cards and using them in these crimes.

It said police decided those drivers were victims of a swindling operation as they had accepted the discount offer without knowing how the fines were paid.
