Drivers jumping the traffic red lights caused 273 accidents that resulted in the death of 10 people and the injury of 558 in the first nine months of 2013, police data showed.

The figure is far below that in the same period of 2012, when 18 people were killed and 615 others injured because of red lights offences.

Accidents resulting from such offences also declined by around 22 per cent from 325 in the first nine months of 2012, showed the figures by the police traffic coordination department at the Ministry of Interior.

“The decline in such offences and accidents is mainly a result of intensified police patrols and better compliance by drivers due to awareness drives undertaken by the traffic police,” the department’s director Brigadier Gaith Al Zaabi said.
