Traffic-related deaths in UAE decrease

In the last four years, traffic accidents claimed 3,919 lives in the UAE, according to the General Department for Traffic Coordination at the Ministry of Interior.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Za’abi, Director, General Department for Traffic Coordination, said 1,065 people died in 2007 against a population  of 6,000,670 inhabitants; 1,071 lost their lives in traffic mishaps in 2008, with an average three deaths every day against a population of eight million.

In 2009, the number of deaths dropped to 966, which was 11.79 per hundred thousand people, while the population of UAE increased to 8,000,190. In 2010, the deaths dropped further to 826, with a daily average of 2.26 and the proportion of 10.03 per hundred thousand population, while the population of UAE was 8,000,233, said added Al Za’abi.

The deaths decreased over the last four years by at least 230, he added.

Traffic safety awareness and campaigns are the reasons for the decrease in the number of traffc-related deaths, he added.
