A fire that erupted in a third floor residential building in Deira has been brought under control, according to the Civil Defence, with no injuries sustained.

The 12-apartment Hassan Sheban Building, located opposite The Palm Deira Metro Station, was evacuated on Monday morning when a fire erupted in the balcony of a third-floor corner apartment around 8am.

While the cause of fire is still being investigated, Mayan Moideen, who runs the Naef Memorial Café on the ground floor of the building, told Emirates 24|7 that other residents were alerted of the blaze around 8am when shouts erupted and people were seen evacuating their homes.

He stated that Civil Defence arrived on the scene shortly after and were “forced to run into the building with oxygen masks due to the smoke on the stairwell”.

Building resident Shirjil, who lives in the apartment below the one that caught fire, said: “I was taking a bath when people shouted the building was on fire. I immediately dressed and followed the others out of the place as fast as I could.”

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Civil Defence teams on the scene have said two apartments have been affected by the blaze, with one room completely gutted.

Residents who spoke to this website stated they were worried for their belongings left behind in the burning building, including their passports, money and mobile phones.

One resident stated he was packed to leave for the holidays to Kashmir later today, but wasn’t sure if anything was left to take home anymore.

Earlier: Two separate incidences of fires have been reported on Monday morning, one involving an apartment building in Deira, while another blaze confirmed in a villa compound in Al Safa 1.

A second fire broke out in a maid’s room, attached to a private villa in Al Safa 1.

The fire broke out around 9.15am and was brought under control by the Civil Defence in five minutes, they stated.

Emergency crews on the scene further added the blaze originated in an outdoor kitchen that is detached from the villa, but no one was in the room at the time of fire.

Neighbour Douglas Langmead spoke to Emirates 24|7 saying the fire broke out around 9.15am. However, due to the on-going construction in the area, the Civil Defence teams took a few extra minutes to reach the scene.

The 62-year-old Australian stated he grabbed the watering hose from his garden and kept the area soaked until the emergency crew arrived few minutes later to take over.

The villa resident was reportedly alerted of the fire on the premises when the electricity to the compound went out.

The Civil Defence has also confirmed no injuries were reported. (With inputs from Bindu Rai)
