A criminal court in Abu Dhabi sentenced two Vietnamese men to one year in prison and ordered their deportation after they were convicted of killing and eating a rare oryx, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The court was told that the two, who works as private security men, had sneaked into a farm owned by an Emirati man and killed the oryx, using knives and sticks, the paper said.

“The two were convicted of killing an endangered animal, theft and damaging private property when they sneaked into the farm at night,” it said.
oryx is one of the most endanger animals in the Arabian Peninsula and the UAE is one of handful nations spearheading ambitious breeding programmes to increase the number of such animals.

Official statistics showed most of the oryx population in the region is based in the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
