Two Emiratis who bought a knife from a grocery, stabbed the salesman with it and stole Dh400 and 12 mobile phone recharge cards were sentenced to three years in jail each by the Dubai Criminal Court.

The 31-year old Indian grocery worker Abdul Rahman Kobamo sustained a three-stich wound on his forehead and another 16-stich wound on his arm with two per cent rate of disability in the movement of his thumb.

At 3.30pm on June 9, the two accused identified as BII, 19, jobless, and KMA, 30, sailor, entered Al Areesh grocery in the Al Rashidiya area and asked the salesman for a knife. Abdul Rahman gave them the knife and they paid him Dh8 and left the grocery.

Five minutes later while Abdul Rahman was cleaning the fridge KMA approached him and engaged him in talking. When the salesman noticed that the other man had opened the cashier drawer he rushed to him and caught his hand.

“KMA pulled the knife and stabbed my arm and then my forehead while the other stole Dh400 and about eight du mobile cards and they sped away in a blue Lancer. Men came out from the mosque and called the police and the emergency of Rashid Hospital where I received treatment,” Abdul Rahman testified before the prosecution.

Hamad Obaid, 24, policeman, testified that following the complaint and investigating the theft police traced KMA who was arrested a week later in the Al Twar area.

KMA confessed to attacking the salesman and stealing Dh400 and 12 du mobile cards along with BII.

KMA testified before the police that he stopped his car next to the mosque and with BII entered the grocery and bought a knife. They waited for a couple of minutes until the other grocery worker left and then entered again.

He said that BII opened the drawer while KMA engaged the salesman in talking. KMA stabbed the salesman on his arm and forehead when he tried to catch BII, testified the policeman.

KMA got rid of the knife by throwing it on Emirates Road and then he washed the car, Obaid testified.

BII who was arrested on the same day repeated the same confession as KMA. The salesman had recognised the two attackers in an identification parade.
