Tyre blow-out accidents kill 4 this year

Sharjah Police has launched a campaign to raise awareness of motorists about the importance of checking the tyres of their vehicles regularly and buying the most suitable tyres of good quality to reduce accidents as a result of tyre blow-outs.

The police will give motorists tips on how to choose the best tyres and avoid being misled by tyre dealers. Brochures about tyre safety in different languages will be distributed to drivers.

Colonel Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer of Sharjah Police said according to the statistics of Traffic and Patrols Department, 380 vehicles were booked in the first half of this year for poor tyre condition compared to 812 for the same period in 2013, indicating that motorists are becoming more aware of tyre safety.

Col. Amer said four people died and eight seriously injured in five road accident as a result of tyre explosions in the first half of 2013 compared to four deaths and five injuries in three similar accidents in the first half of this year.
