Tyre explosions kill 4, injure 31 this year

Dubai Police has urged motorists to maintain speed levels and keep their vehicles in good condition to avoid accidents.

One person died after the rear tyre of his car exploded in an accident on Emirates Road on Tuesday. The victim lost control of his car due to high speed and ramped into another vehicle.

Tyre explosion caused 12 accidents in the first nine months of this year, killing four people and injuring 31 others, which included two critical cases, six medium injuries and 19 minor problems.

Dubai Traffic Police said: "The rate of accidents caused by tyre explosions in Dubai as remained constant at six per cent in the first nine months when compared to the same period last year."

According to statistics from the Planning Department's General Directorate of Traffic, the injured involved nine drivers and 22 passengers. And among the 12 accidents, 11 occurred during the day and one at night.

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafen said: "Many people are unaware of the seriousness of driving with invalid tyres, which can prove fatal."

Major General Al Zafen advised motorists to replace tyres of cars every 10,000 km.
