UAE among top 10 donors for humanitarian aid

The UAE has entered the list of the world’s top 10 donor nations with donations totaling $138.9 million in 2009.
 
With an average of $30.30 per person, the UAE has also become the first non-Western nation to enter the top 10 list, The National reports.
 
While Luxembourg topped the list at $126.30 per person, the UAE was placed seventh, according to figures published by Global Humanitarian Assistance that monitors the distribution of charitable aid from governments.
 
The report stated that in 2009, the UAE bilateral humanitarian aid made it the 15th largest government donor reporting to the Development Assistance Committee that is part of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
 
The overall aid from the country in 2009 was at $859 million and comprised humanitarian aid and debt relief funds to support reconstruction efforts.  Aid from the country saw a massive increase from the 2007 total of $452 million.
