The incidence of diabetes in the UAE has declined significantly during the past four years, says Dr Maryam Shaker, family medicine consultant.

Dr Maryam says, according to International Diabetes Federation, the UAE, which was ranked No.2 in the world in diabetes incidence in 2009, improved its rank to 11 in 2011 and 15 by the end of 2013.

Dr Maryam was speaking at a symposium organised by the Ministry of Health which was inaugurated by Dr Mustafa Al Hashemi, deputy director.  120 people from Dubai and the Northern Emirates and a number of Dubai Health Authority doctors participated in the symposium.

The symposium focused on the issue of chronic diseases in primary health care, including targeting and diagnosis of diabetes type II, and the local and global directory for diabetes, and cardiovascular complications of diabetes.

Dr Mariam stressed the efforts of the UAE government to spread awareness about diabetes among the public.
