An ill 12-year-old Emirati was selected as “person of the month” by Emarat Al Youm to become the first child to win the award since it was introduced by the Dubai-based Arabic language daily at the start of 2012.

The paper said it picked Abdulla Mohammed Ismail, who is suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, for the June award after his donation of two advanced lungs treatment systems for ill children at Latifa Hospital in the emirate.

“Abdullah did not want to receive treatment through costly equipment while other children cannot afford that treatment,” the paper’s editor in chief Sami Al Riyami said.

“He asked his father to buy two similar systems which he donated to the hospital…he himself went and presented the systems to the ill children, who were very happy with Abdullah’s visit and his gesture towards them.”

The paper quoted Abdullah as saying his father bought him the systems for Dh50,000 which helped ease his pains and largely improve his condition.

“But recently I suffered from health problems and I was admitted to Latifa Hospital, where I saw children suffering from the same disease…they were suffering from severe pains and needed similar systems…I was touched by their condition and quickly asked my father to buy two other systems for them.”

The tabloid-style Emarat Al Youm, one of the region’s most popular Arabic language newspapers, said it had launched that award to honour outstanding people for their role in the society, the first prize of its kind in the UAE.

An affiliate of the Dubai Media Incorporated, one of the largest media establishments in the region, Emarat Al Youm said its editing board would pick the winner at the end of each month and that the person must be Emirati.

DMI also includes the English-language Emirates 24/7, the Arabic language Al-Bayan newspapers, Dubai TV and other publications.
