UAE dad finally takes deformed baby home

Father regrets decision to dump son because of deformity

A remorseful father who had abandoned his five-month-old son at a Dubai hospital because of post-birth deformity in the chest finally relented and agreed to take the baby home, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The father told human rights police that he feels sorry for his decision to desert his son and that he had done so because he was angry with what has happened to the baby after he was born prematurely just six month after pregnancy.

The unnamed father said he had not intended to abandon his son and only wanted to express his indignation and sue the hospital for a possible medical error, adding that a post-birth surgery might have caused the defect.

“The father has take his baby home from Lateefa Hospital and pledged in a statement that he would look after him,” said Colonel Mohammed Al Murr, director of the human rights division at Dubai’s police.

“He expressed regret for what he had done and said that he had another handicapped child at home, for whom he has hired two women to look after…he said he is willing to provide care for his second child,” he told Emarat Alyoum Arabic language daily.

Murr said his unit would follow up the baby’s case to make sure he would get proper care at home, adding that it also offered financial aid to him.

“Several families also offered help after reading this case in the newspapers…some families have even offered to take the baby and look after him but his father said he does not need money and pledged to look after him…he asserted that he had never thought of abandoning his baby and only wanted to settle this case with the hospital before taking him home.”
