The results of a study conducted by the Emirates Dog Breeders Society reveal, among other interesting facts, the areas in Abu Dhabi with the highest canine populations.

The study, shared exclusively with Emirates 24|7 by Jamal Jumaa Habash, Chairman of Board of the Emirates Dog Breeders Society, aims at putting together a complete picture of canines in the UAE so as to aid legislation as regards possession of the pets in the UAE.

If you are a dog lover then, the Al Reef Villas on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, may be the place for you.

According to the study, this area has the highest concentration – 38 per cent - of dogs in the emirate.

Khalifa City’s Al Rahaa Beach Villas has 19 per cent of the emirate’s pooches and the Corniche and Khalidyah areas both have eight per cent.

Over all, the study claimed that 80 per cent of the pet dogs in the emirate are expat-owned.

Adopt a dog

The study showed that 35 per cent of pet dogs owned by expatriates came from animal shelters – both private and government-run.

Also the study indicated that the adoption process is completely free of charge where the person applied for the adoption for free (without paying money).

However, five per cent of the dogs owned by Emiratis were adopted from shelters, while 30 per cent were bought and as many as 45 per cent were bred.

Work like a dog

The study also classified 60 per cent of dogs in the emirate owned by expatriates as working dogs – i.e. for purposes like breeding or guarding - and 20 per cent were classified as domestic pets.

For Emiratis, the study stated that the working dog ratio was 90 per cent and the domestic pet ration 10 per cent.

Vet the K-9

According to the study only about 18% of the dogs in Abu Dhabi are registered with a veterinary clinic.

The Abu Dhabi Police have vaccinated 2,500 dogs and have 659 dogs ready to be vaccinated in near future.

Regarding degree of satisfaction for owners of dogs over veterinary services, 83 per cent of participants in the study expressed dissatisfaction at the high charges for veterinary services.

Dog-gone holidays

The study also showed that 64 per cent of expats who possessed dogs felt a lack of quality shelters at which leave their dogs safely when they have to travel or go on vacation.

Also, 24 per cent complained of a sever e lack of health insurance for pets and 15 per cent of non-availability of pet food in all outlets.

Park the dog

Ninety per cent of dog owners surveyed wished for a public park dedicated to dogs.

The Law

Federal Law No 348 of 2008 regulates necessary health requirements for importing and breeding pet animals (dogs and cats) in the UAE.
