UAE drivers committed over five million traffic offences in the first half of 2014, a staggering average of more than 27,000 violations a day, according to a police study.

By the end of the year, the offences could hit a record 10 million, much higher than the 8.64 million road violations committed by motorists in 2013, said the study, which was published by the Arabic language daily ‘Emarat Al Youm’ on Friday.

The study, presented at a traffic seminar in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, showed speeding accounted for more than half the offences in this year.

It blamed the drivers and other road users for nearly 95 per cent of the road accident in the UAE, noting that 24 per cent of the mishaps were caused by negligence.

The study also showed that nearly 22 per cent of the road accidents were caused by sudden change of lane and the rest by failure to leave enough distance with other vehicles besides other violations by the road users.

The study also blamed using mobile phones while driving, noting that nearly 63 per cent of those caught making such offences were Emiratis.
