Employers who fail to report their absconding workers to the police or immigration authorities will be punished under modified labour laws in the UAE.

The ruling was issued by the Supreme Federal Court while hearing a case involving the absconding of a worker and failure by his sponsor to report him to immigration.

The SFC found that the employer’s report on his absconding worker to the labour office in his emirate was not enough under the new law.

“The court stressed that reporting an absconding worker to the labour office will not exempt the employer from punishment. The employer must also inform immigration authorities or the nearest police station,” the semi-official daily Alittihad said.
