The UAE has been free from any cases of bird flu since last reported in 2005, a special committee that monitors the epidemic has declared.

The statement came at a meeting held at the Dubai Municipality’s Department of Health Services in light of the emergence of bird flu cases in 15 countries.

The local committee formed to combat bird flu comprises representatives of local and federal departments of health, agriculture
department, customs, department of environment, municipal and civil defence officials.

The committee follows developments related to bird flu infections reported from all over the world.

Dr Hisham Fahmi, Advisor of both the special committee and veterinary services at Dubai Municipality told emirates24|7 that the committee has taken sufficient precautionary measures to keep the disease away from the country. It is currently monitoring migration of birds and import of poultry.

The committee plans mock exercises to check the readiness of the various authorities in the event of an outbreak.

He denied rumours that global pharmaceutical companies were behind the recent hype generated about bird flu to sell their medicines.
