The UAE’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) have discussed ways to activate the agreement signed between the UAE and India on exchanging prisoners, the MoI said in a media statement yesterday.

According to the statement, discussions focused on overcoming obstacles facing the enactment of this agreement and the effective means of transferring the largest possible number of convicted persons wishing to continue their prison sentences in India as per the agreement’s applicable terms.

Brigadier Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, Director General of the Punitive Reformatory Establishments at the Ministry of Interior, met Anand Bardhan, Counselor – Community Programs, Embassy of India, to the UAE, and his accompanying delegation in his office.

The meeting was attended by department heads at the Directorate General of Punitive Reformatory Establishments and a representative from the International Cooperation Department at the Directorate General of the Undersecretary Diwan at the Ministry of Interior. During the meeting, topics of mutual interest were discussed between the two parties.

This agreement aims to achieve psychological and social stability among inmates and their families. Allowing inmates to continue their prison terms in their home country will facilitate visits and communication with their families.
