UAE miracle sees cancer-hit boy on verge of death win life

An 11-year-old Arab boy who fell victim to the deadly leukaemia and prompted doctors to start thinking of writing his death certificate has fully recovered and returned to play with his friends before the eyes of his elated father.

Ahmed Hassan was admitted to hospital in Dubai two years ago after he was diagnosed with leukaemia, according to the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej.

The boy was then referred to a specialised section at the Dubai Hospital, which began applying chemical treatment on him but also recommended to his family that he should be sent abroad.

His doctor, Abdul Rahman al Gasmi, a consultant at the Dubai Hospital, said Ahmed’s condition became critical a year after he was admitted after the failure of his kidneys, liver and lungs, adding that he also suffered from a serious decline in his blood pressure and his body no longer accepted oxygen.

“After this deterioration in his condition, we realised that Ahmed was nearing his end and we started to prepare his family to accept this reality,” Gasmi said.

“We wanted them to be ready for the news of his death any time….only a small step separated the boy from his death certificate…yet we continued our treatment of him as a medical and humanitarian duty…five days later, we all were shocked to see that his condition began to improve albeit slowly,” he told the Sharjah-based newspaper.

Gasmi said doctors had to stop chemical treatment of Ahmed after it caused a serious weakening in his body immunity, adding that this slowed his recovery.

“But today, nearly two years after treatment, Ahmed appears to have recovered from lukaemia…his family has just celebrated his recovery….he is back to playing with his friends without fear of any fresh lapse….”, the paper said.

It quoted his father as saying :”My message to any family whose member suffers from any serious disease is that they should not give up….keep praying and be sure that God the Almighty will not abandon you.”
