Dubai rain update: Traffic snarls persist

Published

Update: Dubai Police tweeted that several small traffic accidents had resulted in traffic in several areas slowing down due to the rain. However, by lunch time, traffic was crawling back to normal, though very slowly.

No major accidents, however, were reported.

The respite was thought to be brief though with Dubai Police getting ready to handle the traffic after work hours in the evening with one eye on the weather for more rain.

On Sheikh Zayed Road at the section opposite Jebel Ali traffic was badly affected.

The Al Ittihad Road coming out of Sharjah towards Dubai was still hit by traffic jams at noon.

Also, a section of Emirates Road, near National Paints, was still affected by slow moving traffic.

Earlier in the morning, traffic has been moving slowly out of the Gardens and Discovery Gardens areas towards Sheikh Zayed Road.

“I am struck in my car for the last 20 minutes. The traffic is moving at very slowly. It seems there has been an accident as I can hear police cars sirens,” said Rehman B, a resident of Discovery Gardens.

However, by 10.15am traffic ws moving smoothly again.

Dubai Police were out and about from as early as 5am with an early morning accident near Falcon Junction in Shindagha tunnel being reported.

Traffic around that area has been badly affected.

Dubai Police sent out a tweet advising motorists to  accident exercise extreme caution.

Abu Dhabi police at 7.44am also put out a tweet informing of traffic congestion and delay on the Arabian Gulf Road at the Dalma Road intersection.

However, by 8.15am traffic there had eased.

Traffic on Emirates Road from Ajman coming into Sharjah and Dubai was bumper to bumper, with the National Paints roundabout completely jammed till 10am.

Low-lying areas Ajman, especially Sanaya and Al Bustan, were also heavily waterlogged.

Water ponds on highways and slippery raods have already resulted in slow traffic on Monday morning as office goers and students are seen taking utmost caution.

Traffic on the busy Sharjah-Dubai Ittihad Road  was seen moving extremely slowly in early Monday morning and is expected to build-up traffic during the peak rush hours.

Most school buses in Dubai and Sharjah were also seen with fewer children, as some of them chose to skip classes today.
