The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) is monitoring ten product categories to protect consumer experience, the environment and the national market.

Earlier, Esma issued new guidelines for the import, manufacturing and distribution of energy drinks to make the consumption of these products safer to our health.

Included in these guidelines is the requirement of an approved health warning sticker displayed on each product, as well as the instruction that the products be presented on separate shelves.

Apart from energy drinks Esma currently monitors tobacco products, organic foods, toys, diesel, tyres, low- voltage products, energy efficiency for non-ducted air conditioners, LPG cylinders, lubricating oil for internal combustion and oxo-biodegradable plastic bags.

As the authorised body in the UAE to set national guidelines for these products it is constantly reviewing what is needed to guaranty safety of health, the environment and the economy.

In order to do so it cooperates with testing and calibration labs, medical labs, inspection bodies and product certification bodies.

As a result it offers guidelines that are up to date with the most recent national and international safety standards.

As such, it introduced the ban on second-hand tires which will be in effect September 1, 2012.

In addition certain products may obtain the Emirates Quality Mark, which is a distinction mark for approved products showing the commitment of the manufacturer to ESMA standards.

Any national manufacturing or production unit that produces goods monitored by Esma should apply for accreditation of the authority.

Imported goods are monitored to guarantee compliance with the Esma standards, which are set in line with GCC standards and international standards.
