With accident deaths on UAE roads falling from 21.7 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2007 to just three in 2012, the country is well on its way to achieve its goal of zero death per 100,000 inhabitants by the year 2020, according to Dubai Police chief Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim.

The mortality rate on UAE roads compares well with that of Scandivanian countries like Sweden where 2.9 deaths occur per 100,000 inhabitants, Tamim added.

The police chief said this during a ceremony to honour sponsors and media participants in the ‘white dots’ campaign and 700 drivers who did not commit any traffic rule violations in a year.

Those who win 24 white points for offence-free driving for a year can adjust them against a maximum of 12 black points in the following year. Winners of 24 white dots can also adjust them against fines for traffic rule offences. Winners must have a valid driver’s licence issued in Dubai.

Tamim praised the generosity of sponsors of the white dots system like Fairmont Dubai, Canadian Automobiles, Emirates Post, Emirates Transport, CC Lootah, Villa Rotana and others. The Arabic newspaper ‘Al Bayan’ is the media sponsor of the project.

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, director of Dubai Traffic Police, said 700 drivers, who did not commit any traffic offence during 2012, had won under the white dots system. He hoped the number of winners will increase this year.

Khalaf Al Habtoor of the Al Habtoor Group thanked Dubai Police for starting road safety campaigns for the benefit of society.
