Umm Al Quwain on Monday began slashing traffic fines by 50 per cent and said the three-month decision involves only offences committed in the emirate and vehicles registered in the UAE.

The emirate’s traffic chief Lt Colonel Saeed bin Aran said the move is intended to encourage those who have piled up large fines to pay them.

He told the semi-official daily ‘Al Ittihad’ that the decision is also meant to end anarchy on the road by encouraging a large number of drivers whose car registration or driving licences have expired to renew them.

“We urge all drivers to benefit from this decision, which is considered a good opportunity for the offenders,” he said.
