The dead bodies of two Indian nationals have been lying unclaimed for months in the mortuary of Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

According to Indian social workers, the dead bodies of Bahra Kumar (38) and Arvindar Singh Dhurming Singh (27) have been lying in the mortuary for several months due to lack of proper address or contact details of their relatives or friends.

It is learnt that Kumar died of a heart attack on June 12, 2012, while Singh expired of a heart attack on December 25, 2012.

“Since nobody has come forward to claim these bodies, the Khalifa Medical City authorities have approached the Abu Dhabi court seeking permission to dispose of the bodies. They are awaiting court permission for the same,” an Indian social worker in Abu Dhabi said. “They don’t have passport or other details. The bodies will be kept in the mortuary until court grants permission to dispose them of.”

Meanwhile, an Indian prisoner in his late forties died in the Al Aweer jail while he was sleeping in his cell. According to Uma Padmanabhan, Indian Social worker, the man’s body is in the police mortuary and she is trying to contact his family in Qoorg, Karnataka.

“Finally, I got his contact details and I am in touch with his family in India. His parents have expired and the family doesn’t seem to be interested in receiving the body. He was not in contact with his family for about 25 years. Since 2007, he was living as an illegal in the UAE,”the social worker said.

Ataf Ismail Hussain, born in 1959, died on April 5, 2013, and his body is lying in the Dubai Police mortuary. “He was sick and his wife has given permission to bury him locally,” said Ashraf Thamarasseril, an Indian social worker who has repatriated several hundred bodies.

“Three are three other bodies lying in the Dubai Police mortuary and we are trying to repatraite them,” said Padmanabhan.

As earlier reported by Emirates 24|7, the dead body of an Indian from West Bengal was lying unclaimed with Ajman Police for over six months. “After the news appeared in Emirates 24|7, his wife contacted social workers in Ajman and she issued a no-objection certificate. The body was cremated at the Jebel Ali Crematorium,” Indian social workers told this website.
