The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense and Rapid Intervention teams extinguished a fire that broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning, in an under construction 12-floor building at the Airport Road in Abu Dhabi. No injuries were reported.

Captain Abdullah Hamad Al Tamimi, Chief of Customer Service and Public Relations section at the General Directorate of Civil Defense, Abu Dhabi, indicated that as soon as the Operations Room received the notification call at two o'clock, Civil Defense and Rapid Intervention teams from the Al Falah center in Abu Dhabi were immediately dispatched to the scene. It turned out that the fire broke out in plastic material stored improperly in the building’s basement, which caused a high spread of smoke.

Al Tamimi added: “Our teams, supported by Civil Defense teams from the Al Bateen, Al Mina Road and Al Madina stations, managed to extinguish the fire before spreading to the 10th, 11th and 12th floor of the building, where more of the same plastic material was also stored improperly”.

He pointed out that investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and causes of the fire. Moreover, he stressed the need to adhere to safety and security requirements, and to follow safety and security standards in high-rise buildings projects, which employ a large number of workers, thus increasing the rate of errors and accidents occurrence.

He also called for the need to adhere to correct storage rules to avoid such fires, and to provide means of prevention and safety, as well as several exits in the building.

Supervising the operation were Lt. Colonel Hamad Al Riyami, Director of Civil Defense centers in Abu Dhabi, and Lt. Colonel Tariq Sharif, Director of Civil Defense operations.
