Have you ever wondered what life was like as a pearl diver during the early years of Dubai? Or how the rich Emirati culture came to pass over generations as the emirate grew from a sleepy coastal village into a bustling metropolis?

A new children's illustrated encyclopedia on the emirate sets out to answer these very questions, as it delves into the pages of yore in 'The Key to Dubai'.

Released by Explorer Publishing, the book has been penned by expat author Liliane van der Hoeven.

'The Key to Dubai' unlocks the story of the emirate with major milestones, fun facts and delightful descriptions to appeal to children, aimed at readers aged 6 to 14 years, who are either living in Dubai or visiting the city and are eager to learn the who, what, where, when, why and how of this city.

The book also provides important insight into Emirati culture and heritage.

Children can dig deep and find the answers to questions such as: how do camels survive in the desert? What was life like as a pearl diver? And how do wind towers work?

Uncovering the story of Dubai's past, present and future, there is a lesson on every page with attention-grabbing pictures to capture children's imaginations.

Liliane has called Dubai home for more than five years and she will be touring several schools and public libraries from 13 to 19 September, to talk to children about her new book.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, she majored in educational sciences and made a career in communications.

A mother to three school-aged children, Liliane quickly recognised the importance of her children’s understanding of the culture of a country that is very different to their own.

Liliane’s first book, 'Footprints in Dubai', was published in 2012 and helps expatriate children to create a keepsake of their life and friendships in Dubai.

The success of her first book encouraged Liliane to write 'The Key to Dubai'.
