A well-known surgeon in Abu Dhabi performed a successful surgery on an Asian baby boy to remove a uterus and a fallopian tube, described as one of the world’s rarest medical cases.

Dr Amin Al Gowhari, an Egyptian at a private hospital in the capital, said the baby was referred to him from Singapore, where doctors had advised the boy’s parents to have treatment either at the famous US Mayo Clinic or to see Al Gowhari in the UAE.

He said images showed the boy had a uterus, a fallopian tube and a vaginal part, adding that it was the first time in his medical career that he saw a baby boy with such female genital parts.

“The operation lasted around two-and-a-half hour, during which I removed the Fallopian tube and a large part of the uterus,” he told the Arabic language daily 'Al Ittihad'.

“The boy is now in a good condition and is expected to be discharged within days so he can return home with his parents.”

He said the parents would return to him after one year for another operation to remove the remaining part of the boy’s uterus.

Al Gowhari said he had performed six similar operations since 1990 and that he would publish the last surgery in medical journals.

The boy’s father, a computer engineer, said he had chosen Al Gowhari following a medical advice from doctors in Singapore and information he obtained online from global medical sources.
