Video story: Boss of cash@home? Indian wives, Arab men...

Given the myriad nationalities that live in Dubai, Emirates 24|7 took the question to the homes of residents that span the international spectrum and found that where you come from has a lot to do with who runs the budget at home.

For husbands and wives from the subcontinent, it was primarily the wives that called the shots when it came to the money decisions – and the husbands were happy to let them have their say.

In Arab households however, the decision making veered towards the husband – especially on major financial calls.

Dubai resident Karim K, says it’s all him. “If I leave it to her it’s a disaster,” he adds, pulling no punches.

While the African continent provided two contrasting attitudes – from either only wife, to only husband, Western households seemed to be in favour of a 50-50, with exception of “toy boys.”

Daniel Evans a pilot, says, “It’s true for a lot of guys. Guys just want to buy toys.”

Sharon Pereira offers some insight in to why the Indian man is happy to let the wife call the money shots.

“The husband is not concerned about where money is spent, as long as the wife is happy,” she says.

Mehul Raina, also from India and a banker bucks the trend and, says his financial background is the primary reason he handles the finances in the home Hind Bellouk, a PR Professional, adds, “When it’s big budgets I take his point of view. He may only be bothered about his car and how to make it better.”
