Villa owner, contractor ordered to pay 'diya'

The UAE’s top court rejected an appeal by a villa owner and a contractor and ordered them to pay diya (blood money) to the family of an Asian construction worker who died after falling in a manhole at the site.

A Court of First Instance had acquitted the two defendants, prompting the prosecutor to appeal the sentence. A Court of Appeals ordered them to pay diya to the victim’s relatives after finding them guilty of causing the worker’s death by failing to take sufficient safety measures at the construction site.

The two defendants appealed the ruling with the Federal Supreme Court, which rejected their appeal and upheld that sentence.
