As Dubai turns over a new leaf through the pages of time, ‘Emirates 24|7’ looks back upon a record-breaking 2015 for the emirate and its name in the history the books:

Pledge to UAE President

Dubai Police broke a Guinness World Record in December, for collecting the largest number of signatures that expressed loyalty to UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Emiratis and expats stepped up to pledge their allegiance with 13,288 signatures gathered by Dubai Police, breaking the world record that was previously held by China with 12,884 signatures.

The signatures were collected across four different pieces of cloth, representing the four colours of the UAE flag.

These pieces of cloth were in turn stitched together to create a 10-metre long and 5.6-metre wide flag.

Largest LED Projection

At the beginning of 2015, the Guinness World Record winning LED illumination on the Burj Khalifa façade saw the UAE national flag colours, along with flags of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait wow residents and visitors.

The dazzling effects, that showcased fascinating Arabic motifs and ‘mashrabiya’ patterns, was first unveiled during the New Year’s Eve Gala.

Winning the Guinness record for ‘World’s Largest LED-Illuminated Façade’, one can only expect Emaar Properties to match that dazzling display this year.

Largest human sentence

To pay tribute to the UAE on the 44th National Day on December 2, 6,958 Gems students from 35 schools across the country came together to wish everyone a Happy National Day by forming the world’s largest human sentence.

Validated by Guinness World Records officials, the students gathered on the sports field of Gems Modern Academy in Dubai, to form the human sentence as teachers guided them to their positions.

The previous record of 6,262 people was set by the Tiens Group of China on May 8, 2015.

Longest painting

Another record for the December diary, more than 20,000 students, teachers, parents and activists came together to create the world's longest painting, as part of a campaign to raise awareness about autism.

Al Tayer Group and Dubai Autism Centre teamed up at the Dubai Autodrome to create the world’s longest painting, reaching 10.85kms.

Longest Gold Chain

As the start of the Dubai Shopping Festival in January, shoppers at the Deira Gold Souk bus station were in for a surprise as the popular transit point played host to the world’s longest handmade gold chain.

The gold chain, known as the ‘Dubai Celebration Chain’ measured an impressive 5kms in length, while weighing no less than 240kgs and packing over four million links.

The chain took 100 craftsmen over 45 days to produce.

Desert Peace Sign & dancing cars

Back in July, a fleet of 121 multicoloured Land Cruisers formed the universal peace sign in the sun-baked  Dubai desert – stretching 80 meters in diameter.

The stunt, which broke a record for the largest synchronised car “dance”, was later included in a short film ‘Black Knight Decoded’ for Pepsi starring Hollywood actors David Oyelowo and Freida Pinto.

The feat was also filmed from the International Space Station.

Human Spiderman

Back in April, French ‘Spider-man’ Alain Robert made his 65-minute, unaided ascent of Dubai’s twisted Cayan Tower, a record breaker: it was the 121st building he climbed solo, earning the title of most buildings climbed externally by a person.

Robert, who suffers from vertigo, uses anything and everything to reach his lofty goals: pipes, window frames, cables and the gaps between brickwork.

Largest Pyrotechnic image

On March 28, the 20th anniversary of the Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse lit up the sky and broke records: boasting the largest pyrotechnic image, measuring 1,100 feet wide and 535 feet in height (635 feet above ground) depicting the UAE flag.

The display was achieved by the American company, Fireworks by Grucci, winning the title of the Guinness World Record for the ‘World’s Largest Pyrotechnic Image’.

The record-setting image was actually achieved twice in daytime and nighttime performances.

Largest flag mosaic

To celebrate UAE National Flag Day 2015, MasterCard and its partners set a new record by creating the largest mosaic made entirely by bankcards.

The giant mosaic of the UAE flag was made up of more than 30,000 bank cards and stretched over 141 square meters.

Over 21 banks and financial institutions, joined forces with MasterCard to set the record.

Longest Tennis Match

Dubai set a new Guinness World Record in the longest tennis match, when 76 players from the UAE grabbed their racquets and played for nine hours and 15 minutes for ‘Most Players in a Tennis Exhibition Match’.

The previous record was set by 72 players who played for nine hours and 5 minutes in September 2012 in Italy.
