The UAE is a magnet for talent and is on top of the list when it comes to attracting, growing and retaining talent, thanks to the government which has given priority to making life easier and more attractive for external talent.

This is according to Insead business school, which has released the 2014 edition of its annual Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI). The study measures a nation’s competitiveness based on the quality of talent it can produce, attract and retain.

The UAE ranks particularly high on the ‘Attract’ pillar (external openness and Internal openness), reflecting the government’s efforts to diversify its resource-based economy.

As part of a clear drive towards becoming a ‘knowledge economy’, the government has taken steps to attract foreign talent and expertise. This is evidenced by the performance in areas of External Openness (third) with top ranks on foreign direct investment (FDI) and technology transfer (second), reads the report.

The index ranked the United Arab Emirates 22nd globally and #1 in the Middle East, ahead of Qatar (25th) and Saudi Arabia (32nd). Switzerland and Singapore top global rankings.

“These three countries (in the Middle East) combine a high degree of external openness (UAE ranks third in the world, Qatar fourth and Saudi Arabia ninth) with a high level of performance on ‘talent and business enablers’.

“All three countries share the same approach by which their respective governments have given priority to making life easier for business and more attractive for external talents. This is proving a successful combination,” highlighted Bruno Lanvin, Executive Director of Global Indices at Insead and co-author of the report.

Previous surveys carried out by other entities also show the rising popularity of the UAE as a work destination.

A survey by professional networking site, LinkedIn, stated the UAE as the most popular work destination for professionals, globally.

The UAE has been rated as the most popular work destination in the Middle East. Another study by job portal www.naukrigulf.com revealed that the UAE tops the list within the region by a big margin.

After winning the Expo 2020, UAE’s reputation as a work destination has only become better, and many people are willing to relocate to the country.
