With the onset of winter now official since December 22, the UAE has experienced an upward swing in the chill factor, with temperatures dipping to 4.9°Celsius on Monday.

On Thursday morning, NCMS tweeted: "Satellites & hourly metars refer to low clouds over most [of] northern areas."

The cold weather marked the winter solstice, with Rakknah (an Al Ain suburb) and Hameem (Abu Dhabi district) experiencing chilly climes with Mercury dipping below 5°C.

The National Center for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) confirmed a similar weather pattern will continue into the New Year, with a spokesperson saying: “The weather has dropped between two and three degrees now; this cooler temperature will continue into next month.”

The spokesperson added that January and February are usually the months where the Mercury dips further, with the lowest temperature in the past 10 years recorded in Rakknah again, which reached -1°C in January 2008.

While the highest recorded for the same month was 33.6°C in 2013 in Al Rowais.

The NCMS spokesperson continued: “Over the next two days the temperatures will average between 23-27°C in the interior parts of the UAE, dropping by a few degrees on the coastal areas. Meanwhile, the mountains will see temperatures ranging between 12-17°C.”

Parts of the country will also be shrouded in early morning fog on Wednesday and Thursday, especially the interior parts of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Liwa desert.

The weather centre has also issued a marine warning until Friday.

“Due to the north-westerly winds affecting parts of the country, the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea will both be very rough until Friday. Those who are planning to head into the deep sea near Ras Al Khaimah, Hormuz and Mussandam should pay heed.”
