An African woman was caught at Dubai Airport attempting to smuggle cocaine taped to her body.

The woman was arrested in the transit area of Dubai Airport on her way to Cape Town, South Africa from Sao Paolo, Brazil, Gulf News reported citing Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Security officers at the airport grew suspicious when the woman was walking heavily, as if something was hindering her and she also looked afraid.

The woman was taken to the Airport police station, where she was identified.

The passenger was inspected by policewomen and they found 1,872 grams of cocaine in plastic bags taped to her body under her clothes.

When questioned, the woman claimed she had no idea what the substance she was carrying was.

She said that the parcel was given to her by an African person in Brazil to be hand over to another person in South Africa and claimed that she was delivering it against a pay of $5,000 (Dh 18,365). The woman claimed she did not know who the recipient was, but was to identify her by the clothes that she would be wearing.

She was referred to Public Prosecution and charged with smuggling and possessing narcotics and psychotropic substances.
