Woman seeks Dh20m from Abu Dhabi hotel

A European woman is seeking Dh20 million damages from a five-star hotel in Abu Dhabi after suffering from a head injury when a wooden shelf in the wardrobe in her room fell on her, a newspaper reported on Friday.

The unnamed woman accused the hotel management of negligence and failure to comply with safety measures during her stay in the hotel four years ago.

The court agreed to hear the case after receiving a medical report about the woman’s head injury. The case also names the insurance company and contractors who installed the wardrobe.

The woman's case states she was putting her clothes and other personal items inside the wardrobe during her stay at the hotel in July 2008 when the 2.2-kg shelf fell off on her head, causing serious injury.

“The judge heard the case that she has suffered from epileptic fits since she had that accident while doctors assessed the head damage at 50 per cent,” the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Al Bayan said.

The court, which heard the case in the Capital on Thursday, adjourned hearings to September 6, the paper added.
