A Nigerian singer allegedly possessed marijuana for promotional purpose, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Following a tip-off from an informer who claimed that AA, 30, was willing to sell marijuana for Dh300, Dubai Police trapped her red-handed in an undercover operation.

Police handed over Dh300 to the informer after taking photocopies of the notes and asked him to fix an appointment with the singer.

Then an undercover police officer along with the informer met the singer at the appointed time – at around midnight on October 24 last year - in Abu Hail area.

The accused along with other two women arrived in a taxi got into the informer’s car and handed him the drug in the presence of the undercover officer in the car.

When the informer handed over the money to the accused, other policemen who were waiting nearby raided the car and arrested the women.

Police searched the accused and her the two companions but they did not find any other illegal items in their possession.

The two other women were set free after a medical examination, which confirmed they had not consumed drugs.

The accused, meanwhile, denied dealing in drugs and claimed that she came just to meet the informer whom she knows.

The court will reconvene on January 31.
