More than 6,800 women were involved in murder and other crimes in Dubai in the first half of this year, exceeding the total number of female criminals arrested during 2008-2009, a senior police officer was reported on Saturday as saying.

“A study conducted by our experts shows that women can now compete with men in all types of criminal activity,” said Brigadier Khalil Al Mansouri, director of the detectives and criminal investigation administration in Dubai.

His figures, published in the semi official daily Alittihad, showed 6,822 women were arrested in the first half of this year after they were involved in 6,098 crimes.

He said the number is far higher than that in previous years, when 2,738 women were involved in crime in 2009 and 1,645 in 2008.

“Women are now committing crimes that had been monopolized by men…our study shows that women can commit any crime if they have to or if their feelings shifted from love to hatred…many of them have been arrested because they were involved in such crimes as robbery, murder, dumping babies in the street, swindling, fraud, vice and other criminal acts,” he said.

“There has been a sharp rise in women’s criminal activities over the past months compared with previous years…some of them were involved in major crimes while others have formed dangerous gangs.”

Mansouri said Dubai’s diverse ethnic population and the arrival of many women from different nationalities have contributed to the rise in female crime. “Women are now committing new crimes…they could be very cruel when they have revenge motives…our records show that some women committed crimes just to satisfy a personal obsession related to her appearance as they stole expensive bags, jewellery, cosmetic items, accessories and mobile phones.”
