Worker kills friend for Dh500; tries to commit suicide

An Asian worker in Abu Dhabi stabbed his roommate to death after a heated argument over a Dh500 debt before trying to end his own life.

The man attacked the victim in their room in the capital after he demanded his money back, using a kitchen knife. He then tried to stab himself but the bid failed.

In court, he begged the victim’s family to pardon him and accept 'diya' (blood money) to avert execution for murder.

“The judge set July 6 for the next session and asked the victim’s relatives to reply to the defendant’s request. After he had to pay only Dh500, the defendant could end up paying Dh200,000 diya,” 'Al Khaleej' daily said.
