Outdoor workers have been advised to be extra-cautious during the month of Ramadan, as a combination of heat and fasting could lead to health complications.

With Ramadan falling in peak summer this year, doctors fear if proper precautions are not taken then outdoor workers, particularly diabetic patients, can face problems like dehydration, low blood sugar etc.

Diabetic workers who are fasting have been advised to consult their doctors and reduce insulin intake to balance sugar level in the blood.

The advise comes even as strict implementation of mid-day break drastically reduced the number of heat related cases in hospitals.

Dr Bhaskaran K, Medical Director, Al Gharafa Medical Center, Ajman said many workers are not aware of the complications that could arise due to a combination of summer Ramadan.

Dr Bhaskaran said it is desirable to use loose clothes during summer and avoid tight dress.
“Normally summer is not a busy season for clinics, but we get heat stroke and heat related patients during summer and Ramadan period.

The number of such cases has come down sharply, thanks to the strict measures taken by the Government regarding mid day breaks,” Dr Bhaskaran said.

Al Gharafa Medical Center and Al Bustan Medical Clinic have jointly organised an awareness camp for about 1000 workers and distributed free medicine and medical kits to the needy workers.
