Expatriate workers in the private sector can be exempted from a ban on a new job for six months or one year in case their employers fail to pay their wages for two successive months, according to the ministry of labour.

In its weekly “open-day” meeting on Thursday, the ministry repeated terms for lifting the ban on workers who are not listed in the categories that are qualified for an exemption, including that that worker is sacked by his employer.

Another case involves the closure of a company for at least two months provided the labourer reports this case to the ministry for exemption from the ban.

“In case a worker does not receive salary for at least 60 days, the ministry will approve his request to be exempted from the ban and to move to another job,” said the ministry’s assistant undersecretary for labour affairs, Humaid Al Suwaidi.

“The ministry refers all applications for exemption fro the ban to its legal affairs division…most of the applications that have been rejected over the past period was because they did not meet the required conditions,” he said, quoted by the Arabic language daily 'Al Khaleej'.

He said the ministry received 12 new applications for ban exemptions during this week’s meeting, adding that they would be considered.

“An application for exemption from the ban will be accepted in case it is approved by the employer and the worker,” he said.
