Ninety per cent of those who have not yet registered for their ID cards are unskilled labourers working for private companies, according to Dr Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Director-General of Emirates Identity Authority (Eida).

They are expected to show more interest in registering themselves in the coming months, he added.

Dr Khouri said Eida is aiming to register 90 per cent of UAE’s population in 2012. The project is expected to be completed in 2013.

He said linking of the ID card with visa, medical tests and other government services will force all to register.

Eida had fixed February 1, April 1 and June 1 as the deadline for registration and renewal of identity cards for residents of Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively.

About 3.88 million private sector workers have so far registered. A total of 6.2 million Emiratis and expatriates had registered by mid- March 2012.

About 350,000 and 250,000 people are currently registering every month for new cards and card renewal respectively.
