World's largest blood drop: UAE goes for Guinness Record

Emirates Thalassaemia Society (ETS) is bracing to break the Guinness World Records of the world's largest human blood 'drop' when nearly 8,000 people will come together, all in red t-shirt, on 11 October 2013 at Sheikh Zayed Sports City's Zayed Stadium to participate in the remarkable event.

Abdul Basit Mohammad Merdas, Acting Chairman of the ETS, told the media today that the event aims to deliver a passionate message to the community so as to come forward and donate blood for thalassaemia patients and encourage individuals to conduct the pre-marital test as a preventive measures to protect their health.

He urged all community members to participate in the event as the entry into the Guiness Book of Records will further raise public awareness about the disease.

He added that participants, all dressed in red, will gather at the Stadium to create the world's largest human drop in just ten minutes in the attendance of Guiness Book of Records representatives who will count the participants.

Thalassemia, a form of inherited autosomal recessive blood disorders that originated in the Mediterranean region, the disease is caused by the weakening and destruction of red blood cells. Thalassemia is caused by variant or missing genes that affect how the body makes hemoglobin.

Thalassemia can cause significant complications, including iron overload, bone deformities and cardiovascular illness.
