Now that the final weigh-in for the 'Your Child in Gold' campaign has been closed, officials at Dubai Municipality are busy analysing the data to determine the biggest loser.

The five-day exercise kicked off on September 10.

According to the stats provided by the civic body, 28,000 residents signed up for this unique weight-loss contest, which kicked-off with onsite registration on July 15.

Fahima Al Amiri, head of Public Relations at Dubai Municipality, explained that child participants were selected after approval from health experts, and were subjected to special screening. Parents were also advised on regularly monitoring their child’s weight-loss, and to ensure they didn’t take up any quick-fixes.

They even had to give an undertaking about a healthy weight-loss target, to serve nutritious food and to involve kids in sporting activities.

She detailed how after the on-site registration, which had kicked-off on July 15, the second phase included free health checks and consultations by specialists. An interesting line-up with fun exercise plans were also charted out for participants.

This year, the campaign is aimed at families, with their gold reward doubled for joint weight-loss.

For every kilo lost over the 2kg mark, families get 2gms of gold, while individuals get 1gm of gold for every kg lost.

Last year, the campaign was titled ‘Lose Weight, Win Gold’. It recorded 9,666 registrations, and won gold for 2,648 participants. Syrian-born 28-year-old Ahmad Al Shaikh won the title for losing 26kg.

Talking to Emirates24|7, Walid Al Shaibani, head of DM club and coordinator of the campaign, stated ‘Your Child in Gold’ aims to cultivate a healthy lifestyle among the residents.
