Emiratis prefer government pay

Local job-seekers wait for a while until they get a job in the public sector, says Minister of Labour

UAE Minister of Labour Saqr Gobash said yesterday unemployment and social justice were among the major driving forces of what has happened in the Arab World.

“The heart of the matter is related to economy, how many job opportunities it can generate, the academic qualifications required for that and the skills enjoyed by job-seekers,” the UAE minister told WAM at the sidelines of the opening sitting of the 38th Arab Labour Conference in Cairo.

According to him, the current circumstances the Arab countries are experiencing add more significance to this year’s meeting.

Outlining UAE’s efforts to handle unemployment and fighting poverty, Gobash said unemployment rate in the UAE is among the lowest between countries, noting to the different challenges regarding unemployment and employment the most important of them are the key disparities in salary of public and private sectors, a factor that makes Emiratis favour the government sector.

“Emirati job-seekers wait for a while until they get a job in the public sector. Unemployment here is optional,” he explained.

Optional unemployment does thrive when people are given choices and chances to be selective and elective; then they must have got enough financial support at their back to see them through lean periods of life. There is no doubt that government jobs are the highly rated jobs in UAE but that should not be misunderstood to avoid taking up private sector jobs which is an integral part of the UAE annual growth.

Unemployment is the cause of the causes of the deterioration of living and delinquency among young people.
