Bar women from stadiums: Saudi scholar

A prominent Saudi scholar urged King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to ban the entry of women into sport stadiums amidst mounting controversy over whether the conservative Gulf Kingdom should reverse a long-standing policy of excluding women from such places.

Sheikh Saeed bin Musfir, one of the best known Islamic scholars in the world’s dominant oil exporter, said allowing women into sport stadium contravene with Islamic teachings and harm social traditions.

His comments in local newspapers followed speculation the Kingdom of around 29 million people is about to lift a ban on women’s entry to football matches and other public sport events, which are still restricted to men.

“Allowing women into sport stadiums will not achieve any benefit, rather, this will harm social tradition and public interests,” he said.

“I appeal for King Abdullah to issue a decision shutting the door for admitting women into stadiums once and for all, there should be no compromise on our religion, principles, traditions and dignity.’
