‘Eton of India’ set to welcome students in UAE

Mayo College, set up in 1869 in India, was primarily a place to educate the sons of chiefs, princes and leading Thakurs – in short, all that made up the local royalty during those days.

Nearly a few years short of 150, the school is now branching out in the UAE, with its first base in the capital Abu Dhabi.

Having been approved by the regulator Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), the school is expected to soon open its doors and will welcome 2,500 students, reducing significantly the existing shortfall of available places in the capital.

It will be named as The Mayoor Private School and will be managed by Mayo College General Council with a local partner. The school will teach the Indian curriculum of Central Board of Secondary Education.

Nearly all schools that follow the Indian method of teaching start the new session in April, and while an opening date hasn’t been announced, the school will perhaps open enrolment within a few weeks to start operations by April 2014.

Details on the calendar year, as well as the fee structure are pending approval but a representative of the school said that fees will be ‘moderately priced’.

In India, its 2013 annual tuition and development fees is Rs632,700 (approximately Dh40,000) while parents of first-time students may need to pay up to Rs1,024,700 (Approx. Dh64,000) including non-refundable registration and admission fees, and refundable caution money deposits.
