In a shocking turn of events for cricket fans, this is the world cup scorcher that is fast turning into a fizzle fest as New Zealand collapses at 183 in the final against the might of Australia.

However, many fans refuse to give up on the Kiwis just yet, with former captain of Pakistan, Imran Khan taking to Twitter to say: “Hoping New Zealand win for Martin Crowe. He was the most innovative and bold captain in the ’92 World Cup. Sending him all my prayers as he fights his cancer.”

While Sid Mallya, director of IPL cricket team Royal Challengers Bangalore, tweeted: “Hopefully New Zealand gives Australia a hard a time chasing a low total as they were given in the group stage.”

Fans such as Danish Hassan say: Keep your fingers crossed. Trent Boult is yet to bowl.”

Anas Khan tweeted: “What a coincidence.. 183 scored in yet another World Cup Final. Hope New Zealand repeats what India did in 1983 by defending the score of 183.”

In a poll conducted by Emirates 24|7, 66 per cent of the voters still backed New Zealand as firm favourites to lift the world cup trophy.

Australia is expected to bat shortly.
